Offered by the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, the degree program “Master of Arts in Film Studies” is with a four-semester standard period of study. The program provides in-depth knowledge of the history, aesthetics and theory of audiovisual media with a clear focus on film and practical media work in order to create a critical examination of current and past forms of international media culture. The course is research-oriented and deals with issues relating to feature, documentary, animation, experimental and commercial film in cinema, television and museums as well as digital network culture. During their study, graduates acquire important abilities in order to be able to analytically apply media history, theory, cultural theory as well as the methodology and terminology of film studies, to critically assess sources, media phenomena and theoretical positions and to relate them to specific analytical-methodological questions, to reflect on media research objects from different methodological perspectives, to formulate questions according to scientific standards and more.
