Offered by the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz the degree program “Master of Education in German” is with a four-semester standard period of study. The master degree includes the exploration of both older and newer literature as well as historical and descriptive linguistics. With a focus in research and teaching poetry from the Middle Ages and the early modern period, courtly epics, historical narratology, poetics, text and image, historical semantics, historical cultural studies and reception of the Middle Ages the program examines the development of the German language from its beginnings to the present while the aim is to impart historically and theoretically well-founded skills for understanding literary texts, films and other media.
