Description

Geosciences are important for the management and sustainable use of the Earth’s resources, i.e. rocks, minerals and ores, oil and natural gas, water and geothermal energy. Applied Geoscience focuses on the practical aspects of geoscientific processes, for example, using underground areas as subsoil, exploring and extracting fossil and renewable energy sources and exploiting and using groundwater sustainably. Applied Geoscience’s main aim is to protect the environment and adapt a sustainable approach to the Earth’s raw materials. The most common subjects taught in Applied Geoscience degree programs include Applied Hydrogeology and Near-surface Geophysics, Environmental Geochemistry, Carbon Storage and Monitoring, Geology for Earth Resources, Hydrocarbons, Engineering Geology, Energy and Mineral Resources, Geomaterials and more. Apart from gaining thorough theoretical knowledge, students in Applied Geoscience are also encouraged to participate in practical projects and field work in order to develop the most essential professional skills, like management and leadership skills, the ability to assess environmental risks, critical and analytical thinking, as well as creative problem-solving and strategic planning skills. Potential careers for Applied Geoscience graduates include positions in environmental consultancy, pollution prevention, geological surveying, disposal of energy-related waste, geothermal energy and subsurface energy storage and others.
