Robert Schuhmann University of Music and Media, founded in 1972 and named after the German composer, conductor and music critic, is a public music school seated in Düsseldorf (North Rhine-Westphalia) that has the right to confer doctoral degrees. Round about 850 students from more than 40 countries are enrolled there in Bachelor and Master degree programs that prepare them for a career as a musician performing in opera and symphony orchestras, a church musician, a soloist, a sound engineer, or a composer. Prospective students can choose between four study programs: “Music“, “Music Promotion“, “Audio and Video“, as well as “Music and Media“. The eight-semester study program “Music“ aims to teach students to play alongside other musicians in orchestras and ensembles. It includes the subjects Piano, Organ, Orchestral Instruments, Voice, Guitar, and Composition. The eight-semester study program “Music Promotion“ comprises the subjects Conducting, Auditory Education, Music Education, Church Music, and Choir Conducting. The program “Audio and Video“ combines art-related studies with studies relating to technology and engineering. The focus of the study program “Music and Media“ is on providing practice-oriented education in the media and music sector through such subjects as Music Informatics, Management, Media Composition, and Media Dramaturgy. Added to this are the excellence study programs “Concert Exam“ and “Composition“, as well as a doctoral program in Musicology. Prerequisite to study at Robert Schuhmann University of Music and Media is the completion of an aptitude test.
