RWTH Aachen University offers the 13-semester model course of study “Medicine”. What is exceptional about this course is that it combines preclinical and clinical subjects that allow students to have more practical experience. The latter is achieved through contact with patients from day one. In the first and second semesters of their studies, participants will be introduced to the basics of medical studies, e.g. principles of hygiene, first aid, and emergency medicine. From the third through the sixth semester of the program, students will take interdisciplinary lessons regarding the organ systems of the human body. This is also the time when students can begin to select their elective courses in order to shape their studies based on their personal interests. Semesters seven to ten feature more practical training with internships, diagnosis-oriented lectures, examinations courses, and others. Semesters ten to twelve mark a practical year where students will have practical training in the departments of Surgery or Internal Medicine.
