The Orient is a term used to describe the East, and more specifically, North Africa, the Middle East and Western Asia. Oriental Studies is an academic discipline that focuses on languages, religion, traditions, politics, history, geography and culture of the past and present of the Orient. There is a specific focus on Islam, Islamic Arts and Archaeology. Oriental Studies degree courses teach a variety of subjects, the most common of which include North African History, Classical Arabic Literature, Persian Literature, Islamic Religion and Thought, Islamic History and Culture, Basic Arabic, Archaeology and Art History, Linguistics, Middle Eastern Society and more. Students also have the opportunity to research and discuss topics in Oriental Studies that include Women in Middle Eastern Cultures, Islamic Beliefs, Islam in the Media, Economics and Politics of the Middle East, Languages and Dialects, and Oriental Music and Art.
