Description

Toxicology is a scientific discipline that studies the effects of chemical substances on living organisms. Toxicology combines concepts from biology, chemistry, pharmacology, and medicine to analyze potential toxins, diagnose patients and minimize the impact of harmful substances on humans and the environment. Toxicology has many applications, such as drug development, pharmacology, risk management, cosmetic product development, environmental management, marine pollution control and food safety testing, for example. Toxicology degree programs generally teach subjects like Chemical Ecotoxicology, Drug Toxicology, Food Safety, Laboratory Animal Science, Animal Physiology, Molecular Toxicology, Bioanalysis, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Environmental Toxicology, Forensic Toxicology and more. Students in Toxicology are taught how to properly identify dangerous chemicals, assess environmental risks and potential effects of toxicants, and measure the impact of different pollutants. Toxicology degree courses are practice-oriented, so students also have the opportunity to develop professional skills like data gathering and processing, analytical thinking, critical assessment, project management and problem-solving skills. Toxicology graduates can pursue careers in environmental management, food safety, water quality assessment, forensic toxicology, toxicology consulting, public health and safety, drug development, chemical substance regulation and other fields.
