The degree program “Master of Arts in Japanese Studies” at the University of Hamburg provides an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to the study of historical and contemporary aspects of Japanese history, literature, religion, art history, society, and culture. During the study process, participants acquire profound knowledge of historical and contemporary Japan as well as the Japanese language. Thus, they become experts on Japan, capable of providing insights and interpretations based on an elaborate understanding of cultural and historical backgrounds, and of present-day Japan. Moreover, students will acquire sophisticated analytical and critical-thinking skills as well as the ability to independently conduct high-quality research. At the final stage of the degree program, students will be able to recognize and apply appropriate research methodologies in understanding a variety of social and cultural issues in Japan. Graduates of the Master's degree program can use their language skills to work as translators, interpreters or teachers. Many students also choose to work in such areas as finance and investment, as well as law. Another option is to go into publishing or work at a management consultancy.
