Description
The study program “Bachelor of Arts in Languages and Cultures of India and Tibet” offered at the University of Hamburg provides students with knowledge of the languages, culture, philosophy and literature of the Indian subcontinent and Tibet. The course of studies spans four years, with a focus on spoken and written language, cultural topics and methodological skills. Internationalization and international dialogue are core issues in all subjects taught. The main goal of the degree program is the acquisition of language skills (focus on Sanskrit, Hindi or Tibetan) and knowledge of cultural and social developments in both India and Tibet. The course is divided into two main areas, namely “Language and Culture of India” and “Language and Culture of Tibet”. The degree program is designed to give students in-depth language skills in two selected languages, where they can choose between Hindi, Sanskrit or Tibetan. The one that is not chosen will be studied as a secondary one, providing basic knowledge. The Bachelor's degree program qualifies graduates to take part in the International Master's degree program in South Asian Studies, Tibetan Studies or Buddhist Studies (taught in English). After successfully graduating from the Bachelor's degree program, participants are prepared to pursue a career in the field of university and non-university educational and research institutions, museums and libraries, as well as in journalism or publishing.
