The state examination program "Law" at the University of Hamburg introduces to students different and complex areas of Law through many theories and analysis. During the nine-semester course of studies, participants will gain basic and in-depth knowledge of the three most important areas of Law, namely Public Law, Criminal Law, and Civil Law. There are a total of thirteen priority areas that are covered by the degree program, including Commercial and Corporate Law, Social Law, European and International Law, Maritime Business Law and many others. The course of studies is designed to qualify students in negotiation, interviewing and mediation while providing them with law-related foreign language skills. In order to familiarize participants with the future career life that they can expect, the degree program in Law is also combined with an internship period. For being officially graduated from the state examination program of Law, participants need to pass the “First Law Examination”, formally referred to 1st State Examination, which consists of the “university priority area examination” as well as of the “state compulsory subjects examination”. Graduates can work in different fields with legal relevance, including business, politics and media. In order to be able to work as prosecutors or lawyers, students must also complete a two-year practical training in civil service.
