Description
The study program “Bachelor of Arts in General Linguistics” at the University of Hamburg enables participants to learn how to interpret language, and to understand the science behind how people communicate. Students will be engaged with the study of language on a conceptual level as well as they will be dealing with the detailed level of raw linguistic data. The course of studies provides knowledge for the most important problems and solutions in relation to languages, terminology and methods used. It includes three obligatory subjects - Phonology, Morphology, and Syntax. There are also elective subjects where participants can choose between the subjects of Language Typology, Sociolinguistics, and Corpus Linguistics. The most important part of the degree program centers on the Non-Indo-European Language Families, namely Ural, African, Asian and others. The rest of the study process introduces students to the historical, social and political conditions under which a spokesperson adapts, receives or gives up its language. Graduates of the Bachelor's degree program in Linguistics have many career pathways. They can either continue their education with a Master's degree program in Linguistics or simply find matching positions in the media, libraries, as well as the IT sector. A career in multilingual institutions, educational organizations and publishing are also among the career options of the program’s participants.
