The University of Music Detmold, founded in 1946, is a public music school seated in Detmold, North Rhine-Westphalia. It has the right to confer doctoral degrees. Nearly 760 are prepared for professional activities in the orchestra or on the concert and opera stage. The University’s educational portfolio consists of 39 study courses (including postgraduate and continuing education programs) in the following fields: Art Education, Church Music, Chamber Music and Song Accompaniment, Choir and Orchestra Conducting, Opera Voice, Song Voice, and Oratorio Voice, Music Education/Music Management, Elementary Music Education, Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy, Composition, Recording Production, Music Theory and Ear Training, and Musicology. A special feature of the University is the Detmold “Jungstudierenden-Institut“, whose purpose is to promote musically gifted children and adolescents from an early age so as to counteract shortage of new musicians. The Institute combines artistic major subjects and the acquisition of knowledge relating to music history, improvisation, and choir voice with extra-musical elements such as educational travels. The following degrees can be obtained at the University of Music Detmold: B.A., B.Mus., B.Ed., M.A., M.Ed., M.Mus., and Concert Examination.
