Description
Soil Science focuses on the role of soil as an essential part of the environment. It is a natural resource and provides the environment with many plants to grow in. Studying the soil system helps find the best way to produce and manage food, fuel and fiber while preserving the soil for the future. Soil science programs help students gain understanding of the physical, chemical and biological processes taking place in the soil, and realize the importance of soil as a source of life. Students are taught a number of subjects, like General Chemistry, Microeconomics, Food Science, Soil Management, Geography, Soil Ecology and Agricultural Issues. In recent years, the importance of sustainability has grown, so the preservation of soil is on focus. Students have the chance to combine the theoretical with research and practical experience in laboratories or the field. Careers that can be pursued based on a degree in Soil Science include environmental consultant, agricultural producer, ecologist, researcher and educator, laboratory manager, surveyor, forester, waste management specialist, soil manager and climate change scientist, among many others.
