Classical Philology deals with the two classical languages – Latin and ancient Greek –, as well as ancient history, classical archaeology and classical pedagogy. Although the classical languages are dead today, they have a significant role in cultural history. Students learn about various aspects of Classical Philology like literature, culture, philosophy and linguistics. Subjects taught in Classical Philology degree programs usually include Ancient History, Classical Languages in Translation, Ancient and Medieval Philosophy, Latin and Ancient Greek Pedagogy, Indo-European Linguistics, Ancient Politics, Ancient Gender Studies, Paleography, Renaissance Studies and more. A degree course in Classical Philology aims to combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience, so students are encouraged to carry out research and develop skills which will prove to be essential in the field – analytical and critical thinking, problem solving, the ability to gather data and draw conclusions, work independently and in teams and create and follow strategies. Career prospects for Classical Philology graduates are various.
