The University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, founded in 1778, is a foundation university seated in Hanover, Lower Saxony. It accomodates more than 2,400 students, and is sponsored by the Public Law Foundation. Being an educational institution in Veterinary Medicine, the University offers study programs in Veterinary Medicine, and Biology, as well as a doctoral program. The program in Veterinary Medicine consists of a theoretical study part, which lasts four years, a practical study part, which takes place in the ninth and tenth semester and which includes an internship in a veterinary practice, hygiene monitoring, animal breeding and animal husbandry, as well as food monitoring and foodstuff inspection, and, finally, an examination semester. In the field of Biology, prospective students can choose between the degree programs “Biology“ (B.Sc., in partnership with the University of Hanover and the Hannover Medical School), as well as “Animal Biology and Biomedical Sciences“ (M. Sc.). The doctoral program culminates in a Dr. med. vet. or Dr. rer. nat. degree. At PhD level, the University provides the international study programs “Animal and Zoonotic Infections“, “Systems Neuroscience“, and “Veterinary Research and Animal Biology“.
