Description

The postgraduate Master's in Medical Law at Dresden International University is interdisciplinary in the best sense of the word: doctors, business economists, lawyers, insurance clerks and public health managers discuss and learn together at eye level.

The Medical Law, LL.M. programme is a postgraduate course of study leading to the academic degree of "Master of Laws". The primary educational goal of the Master's programme is to provide graduates of law and medical or health economics programmes with a first university degree qualifying them for a profession with competences in medical law, which are a prerequisite for solving problems at the interface of the two disciplines of medicine and law. Finally, the participants master central fields of work in medicine from a legal perspective.

The programme imparts the ability to analyse medically relevant issues from a legal perspective and to cooperate with representatives of the other discipline in solving relevant problems. This involves both the transfer of knowledge and procedures on how to deal with such issues. In view of the breadth of this field, problem solving is worked out with the participants in individual areas selected as examples. Practical relevance was decisive for the selection of these areas.

The course is aimed at students who have already completed a law or medical degree and have relevant professional experience in the medical or legal field.

Against the backdrop of demographic change and the constant development of medical research and its application in practice, doctors are subject to increasingly complex interrelationships, but also disputes between medical professional law, the medical professional code of conduct and the implementation of the latest treatment methods on patients. If we look at the everyday work of a specialist doctor in a hospital, for example, the attending physician is confronted with questions of living wills, health care proxy and power of attorney for guardians, with effects from the Patients' Rights Act and the resulting case law. In addition to striving for optimal treatment quality through the DRG system, his actions are also always under pressure from economic efficiency. Through the knowledge that doctors acquire in the legal sub-area of medical law, doctors can decide on professional actions more consistently and safeguard themselves professionally by acquiring basic legal knowledge.
