Description

The state examination program "Medicine" at the University of Hamburg provides students with a training in the medical sciences, while endowing them with the communication, interpersonal, and clinical skills required by today’s physicians. The six-year course is designed to introduce to participants the core competencies required to become highly skilled doctors. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hamburg trains physicians who are able to provide high-quality medical assistance corresponding to recent achievements in medicine and high ethical standards. The practical skills training is as important as the gaining of psycho-social skills, which are essential for a career in medicine. In addition, medical students can select their content of studies according to their interests. The course of studies integrates theoretical, theoretical-clinical and clinical-practical aspects during the first semester so that theory and practice can be networked throughout. The practical part of the study process is developed from three perspectives, namely: practical skills in diagnosis and therapy; theoretical basics; as well as social interaction with patient and colleagues. Upon successfully passing the university examination phases, completing the practical year, and also passing the medical examinations, students receive their license to practice medicine. A vast array of speciality training pathways is available after obtaining a medical qualification, ranging from general practice or emergency medicine through obstetrics or ophthalmology to pediatrics or psychiatry.
