The Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, founded in 1773 and seated in Düsseldorf (North Rhine-Westphalia), is a public art school with the right to confer doctoral degrees. It provides study opportunities for more than 600 students. The Kunstakademie is organized into two departments: the Department of Art, and the Department of Art-related Sciences. The Department of Art comprises the study courses “Architecture“, “Sculpture“, “Set Design“, “Design, Typography and Book Art“, “Film and Video“, “Free Art“, “Integration of Visual Arts and Architecture“, “Painting“, and “Painting and Graphics“. The Department of Art-related Sciences includes the study courses “History of Art“, “Art in the Public Sphere“, “Philosophy“, “Education“, “Didactics of Fine Arts“, “Sociology“, and “Poetry and Artistic Aesthetics“. Studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf are completed with a Diploma degree or with the state examination. The Department of Art-related Sciences also provides the opportunity to obtain a doctoral degree.
